Nature versus fat cats of Wall Street.. who will win?

Posted by msterilinn on Jul 16, 2008

Here is a controversy with an ending which is scary to contemplate. If the fat cats of Wall Street win this battle, everyone loses in the long run. Nature holds many treasures deep within as well as without, and if we are not very careful, we will not only destroy the environment which houses many forms of Life, yet we will also ensure a very bleak future indeed. This is a game being played to line the pockets of a few at the expense of many.

Wealthy speculators are driving up gas prices and fueling calls for harmful new drilling off our coasts and in pristine places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Speculation in the oil markets is a major factor in high gas prices. Here’s how it works: Weak oversight and accountability in the oil market allows wealthy investors from around the world to drive up the price we pay for gas by purchasing oil that they have no intention of using. According to Michael Masters of Masters Capital Management, who testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee in June, “with greater regulation [of speculation], oil prices could drop to $65 or $70 a barrel within about 30 days.”

Officials within the Bush Administration’s own Energy Information Agency estimate that oil from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge wouldn’t hit the market for several years and would only reduce gas by a few pennies. Similarly, the agency has said that offshore drilling would not significantly impact domestic production or prices before 2030. More drilling may benefit wealthy investors, Big Oil companies and their allies in Congress, but it won’t lower prices at the pump or end America’s oil addiction.

Mama Polar Bear with her CubsBut this drilling would come at a terrible cost to our wildlife and the environment. Arctic drilling activities would disturb the most important onshore denning habitat for America’s threatened polar bears — potentially causing polar bear mothers to abandon their cubs.

Offshore drilling has its own problems: Each platform produces toxic discharges that can poison and kill marine wildlife and dumps tons of air pollutants into our atmosphere.

Defenders of Wildlife is actively working to help preserve our wildlife and the environment, and we can do our part as well. If you are like me and have a passion to save our wildlife, then please take a few moments and let your voice be heard.

Please take a stand against irresponsible policies that hurt our families and put our wildlife at risk. Send your message now!

Greetings

Your Blog found me by accident while searching for something else and I am moved to reply, if the forum permits? We share a devotion and respect for our earth, her abundance and the natural path which is being destroyed for the corporate, profit centered agenda. Our voices have not been heard, when so much money is being made, why would they be heard now?.

The truth you speak in your Fat Cats posting is based on information we’re able to glean from a controlled press and limited information. The holistic truth is far worse, they speak of the inevitability of $12-$15 dollar a gallon fuel, soaring food costs globally, outsourcing of jobs of importance, mass exodus of rural dwellers back to the city, control of food production, delivery and agriculture. The USDA “National Animal Identification System” desires to assign a numeric number to any potentially edible creature, such as chickens, goats, llamas, horses, with reports, fees, paperwork requirements for each transport, birth and death of every animal, while the monstrous feed lots will require only one number each, who does this “protect”?

Is the contamination and irradiation of natural produce or the steroid, hormone, antibiotic “meat” available in your supermarkets something you want to have on your plate? Why do the corporations want us to have only non food, synthetic food substitutes? What about the approval of cloned meat that will eventually reach us? Does it take more than a little imagination to see where this could be headed and what the results will be for us as individuals?

When there are already unaccountable wells that have been drilled over the last several decades and because of their great productivity have been capped off, is there really a need for more drilling? when our planet is awash in readily available petroleum is it good for the corporate bottom line to utilize it? And so the noose tightens. Using an inefficient fuel source such as corn as an alternative should be criminalized, particularly when it is one of the major, formerly inexpensive foods for many nations who are now facing starvation.

My thoughts are that if we are to survive, we will need to become more independent, more informed, grow gardens, utilize our resources responsibly and find others of like mind. Historically, it’s been the indigenous cultures that have embraced the Natural Path while only the European/whites have sought to subjugate, conquer, divide and profitize to their peculiar immediate gratification needs, ignoring completely the next generation let alone the next seven generations. Restoring harmony to ourselves, health, environment and planet will require a redirection to the Natural Path and it will not matter the color of the exterior package. There is strength only in numbers.

Blessings

Arctic drilling would also disrupt the caribou herds. As you mention, this isn’t an instant fix, but would take years to extract and wouldn’t be a lasting solution to our gas consumption. We need to look at alternatives and focus on preserving our wild spaces because ultimately the wild spaces will save us by providing clean air to breathe.

Human beings underestimate the power of their own thoughts and behavior. Each time you expend energy on a particular subject, you are channelling energy in that direction. Each time you make a choice about lifestyle, whether to fuel up your car or decide to create other priorities, yo uare influencing the evolution of your sense of the future.

Herbal~weaver.. such an insightful comment! I am certain most people do not realize how serious the situation around the Earth truly is. I try to remain optimistic, and do my own small part where I may. Meanwhile it is wise to learn how to survive, as mentioned, in growing our own food and teaching those around us how to care for themselves. It is not easy, and truthfully it will only get worse, yet we must keep trying even though we are up against staggering odds.

Many blessings to you and yours as well…

Liara.. as always, I welcome your visit. We all have the power to create our worlds through our thoughts and deeds. Taking action in positive ways creates waves whether we know it or not. Personally, so many blessings have come my way, and I am always thankfully amazed at how loved and protected I truly am as I venture through dangerous waters.

Enjoy!

Steamboat.. people tend to only look at that which infuences their own space and desires. If more folks were to realize how important it is to see the whole picture with open eyes, they would (hopefully) realize how nature connects us all in this Earthly Life.

The great deceptions being played by the powers that be have most people fooled into following the chosen path blindly. Most humans choose the path of least resistance until it is too late, then they become angry when it becomes clear to them. Then they just choose to find someone or something else to blame, never realizing (or admitting) that they have had the power to avert disaster long before it occurs.

Thanks for the visit! ;)

Nature is always at its stake. It is created for human to take care. Sadly not all human are becoming good and the majority doesn’t really care. Because they are busy for their own selfish interest holding life without looking for the better tomorrow with a great concern.
Your blog have seen so much care for the earth. God surely will very much thankful that there are now growing in numbers people who have concern for what he created.

Thanks for the visit azyrham. We are meant to be good stewards, living in balance with Nature. Most humans have forgotten the original instructions, having been purposely distracted from our true purpose in living on this Earth.

Again, thank you… I truly love this planet Earth, and pray there is enough people to help create a change in the world views of those who inhabit this world alongside us. Sending out positive vibes and Love for the Earth and all her inhabitants is something I can do in my own small way. I truly hope our children and their children will inherit an Earth that still has wild and beautiful places to visit and enjoy.
